The
Rubbermaid Story
You all know the Rubbermaid
company and its products. It had been around
since the 1920s,
making its first big consumer splash with
a red
rubber dustpan. By the 50s and 60s it was
making all manner of consumer goods like
plastic garbage cans and water skis.
Fast-forward to the 1990s and plastic prices
have skyrocketed. When Rubbermaid informed
Walmart, which was responsible for at least
20% of its revenues, that it would have
to raise prices
Walmart dumped them for a look-alike
company. Sales suffered so much that Rubbermaid
closed 9 plants and was eventually acquired
by a huge conglomerate in 1999. Rubbermaid
is still with us today but it's just a
name in a
portfolio.
Fuck Walmart.
