Now
Hear This
The
first thing I thought when I heard about
Pixar's upcoming Calvin & Hobbes
movie was "Who would they get to
do Hobbes' voice?" I mean, Andy Sirkus
will be totally handling the tiger's mo-cap
but for the life of me I couldn't picture
the sound that would come out
of
the
mouth of Calvin's imaginary pal. (If you
think about it the voice should sound exactly
like Calvin's but taking such a conceptual
approach would confuse the focus groups.)
Without
any doubt it will have to be cool, wise,
mellow, but with just a touch of smart-ass.
The eventual choice could make or break
this
production.
Christopher Lloyd? Nope. Steve Buscemi? Nope. Robert
DeNiro? Nope. Bill Maher? Nope-nope-nope-nope.
And then it hit me, and I almost hate to say this...
Johnny Depp.
He's almost too famous for such a part but go to
youtube and bring up a video
with Depp in it,
then close your eyes and imagine his words rolling
out of Hobbes' furry yap. It totally works, especially
when he says something like "It's still April
1st, suckers!"
