Good
Eats
There
are, generally speaking, three kinds of people who
go to restaurants: Those who flow with the trends and
seek the currently popular eating spots, those who
have found places they love and stick with forever,
and those
who
honestly
don't
care
where
they eat. (I am, of course, not including fast food
establishments in this list, no matter how "restauranty" their
media blitz makes them seem.)
I, personally, am of the "find a good place to
eat and keep returning until they torch the place for
the
insurance
money"
kind of diner. And since I've found a good place or
two to nosh over the years I'd be remiss if I didn't
share them. With that in mind I'd like to invite anyone
in
the
Northeast
Dallas
area,
specifically
Garland,
to visit my three favorite "go-to" dining
spots. They're all homey
and the food is inexpensive and tasty.
The first is Ernesto's
Mexican Restaurant, a dandy
little hole-in-the-wall at 1202 Northwest Highway,
near Centerville Road.
The second is
Vetoni's Italian Restaurant, in the heart of old downtown
Garland at 620 Main Street. BYOB, and live music on
the weekend.
My third fave is Alfonso's
Italian Restaurant at 718
N. Buckner Blvd, suite 222. This one is inside the
Loop on the east side of Dallas. The garlic rolls are
to die for.
Finally, Kaze,
a fubulous sushi and hibachi restaurant just across
from Town East Mall at 3919 Pavillion Court
in Mesquite. It's a little gem with the nicest hostesses
in town.
Bon appetit.

Believe
it or not, the impetus for today's darkly-tinged comic
was not the recent shooting
in Colorado but my reaction to an interview with writer
Nora Ephron, recorded several years ago and replayed
shortly after her death. In it she admitted to
calculating how many
meals
she probably had left in her life and made the decision
to make each of them her "last meal", to make it as
enjoyable as possible. Although
for her real last meal she requested a hot dog from
Nate 'n Al's deli.
I hope she got it.

Oh,
That Mitt.
Ann
Romney appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" today
and when asked about Mitt's tax problems replied:
"We've given all you people need to know and understand
about our financial situation and how we live our
life."
"You people."
Ruh-roh, Raggy.
Video Time!
Here's the lovely Ann Romney putting her big, fat, Italian-leather-clad
foot in it on "Good Morning America".

President Obama's Top 50 Accomplishments
Number 3: Passed Wall
Street Reform
Signed
the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection
Act (2010) to re-regulate the financial sector after
its practices caused the Great Recession. The new law
tightens capital requirements on large banks and other
financial institutions, requires derivatives to be sold
on clearinghouses and exchanges, mandates that large
banks provide “living wills” to avoid chaotic
bankruptcies, limits their ability to trade with customers’ money
for their own profit, and creates the Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau (now headed by Richard Cordray) to
crack down on abusive lending products and companies.
For the full list of his 50 finest achievements read the Washington
Monthly story.
