Pete
Seeger, 1919-2014
My
introduction to Pete Seeger came as his part
as a banjo player in the movie Alice's
Restaurant, which I first experienced
in 1973. He
and Arlo Guthrie were entertaining Arlo's hospitalized,
and dying, father, Woody Guthrie, with a rousing
rendition of Woody's own "Let's
Go Riding In the Car-car". It was
clear, even in this brief cameo, that Mr.
Seeger was something of a big deal, though
I wasn't sure what.
I later became better acquainted with his music
(I currently have seven Seeger LPs in the
collection) and was genuinely influenced by
his puckish
world-view,
as reflected
in
his
songs
like "Little
Boxes", "Garbage",
and "Old
Time Religion". But "Sailing
Down This Golden River" will always
be the song I think of when I remember Mr.
Seeger.
Sail on Fellow
Traveler. And well met.
