Splat!
In
Alabama a farm-worker gets paid $2 to harvest a twenty-five pound
box of tomatoes. I stopped by the local supermarket
today and weighed a fist-sized tomato and it came to
a half-pound. That means you'd
have to pick 50 tomatoes to make those two dollars.
(BTW, do the math on that. I easily pay
75 cents or more for a tomato. Is there
any sane reason the mark-up on a tomato
should be 1900%? Here's an idea... pay
the farm-workers more and kick the middlemen
out of the fiscal loop.)
It's not
easy work. American farm workers typically don't last
a day at the job, picking a a dozen boxes or so before
calling
it quits. But immigrants have been known to pick 150
boxes a day. That's great for the Alabama tomato farmers
but right now their crop is rotting on the vines as
their State congress, led by the friendly Republican
Party, recently passed anti-immigrant
laws that emptied the fields and sent all the braceros racing
for the borders.
Way to go, geniuses.

I had planned a Halloween joke for
today but the 'net is puking them up left and right
so I thought
I'd go for the tomato gag. Everyone loves them tomatoes.

Republican Job Creation Update
"We're
going to have a relentless focus on
creating jobs." -
John Boehner, February 10, 2011.
The following is #102 in a list of Republican
job creation activities
since they gained control of the House
in 2011. None, sad to
say,
have
yet to result in one, single new job.
(102) 10-31-2011: A new report revels that GOP "job-creating"
spending
cuts resulted in the loss of 370,000 jobs.
Gosh, who'd-a-thunk?
NOTE: As a result of an unexpected wave of enthusiasm
the Republican
Job Creation update now has its
own web site. It will remain on the RP but
a web site of its own will raise its visibility
on the 'net as
we progress towards the critical 2012 elections.
And I thank you for your support.
