Know
Your Scumbag, Part 2
This
is Ronald A. Williams, CEO of AETNA. His total
compensation in 2008 was a tad over $24 million
dollars.
When he joined
the company in 2001 it was losing $266 million
a year. By 2006 AETNA was making over $1.7 billion
in profits.
How?
By dumping over 8 million insurers who were deemed
unprofitable. You know... sick people, while
at the same time raising rates for everyone else.
Oh, and those "everyone else's"? Those
are big corporations like Bank of America and
FedEx. Yes,
you're paying higher rates for those services
because they're being charged higher insurance
rates by AETNA.
So you subsidize AETNA every time you send cookies
to grandma. Sweet.

On
a less fragrant 'note', I've just discovered an
incredible anime called "Death Note".
This thing is a blast! Subtle. Smart. Sublimely
cold-blooded.
The plot concerns a high-school senior, Light
Yagami, who discovers a supernatural notebook
used by the death gods,
or shinagami. If you think of
a person's face and write their name in this book,
the person dies. But that just scratches
the surface of the intricacies of the death note,
and to share anything else would spoil the fun.
I'm only up to episode 16 and I can't wait for
what's to come. If you'd like to check it out
go to
tv-links.cc and
search the Anime section.
