Computers are useless. They can only
give you answers.- Pablo Picasso
What's
the big hairy deal about secret ballots? Why on Thor's green
Earth should people feel so insecure about their choices
of candidate?
When
John Edwards was still in the race I actively supported him,
but when he decided to pull out I switched to Obama. That's
just how it works, there's no shame in it. So now, in November,
you don't have to ask me who I voted for. Egg my house, insult
my cooking, annoy my ex-wife (please) I don''t care.
All
this secrecy does is allow those with access to the votes
plenty
of time
and
occasion
and
reason
to alter
them.
As
Joseph Stalin said "It's not the people who vote
that count, it's the people who count the votes."
That's why I say make the votes
public. In fact, give everyone a printed receipt of their
vote and then make the entire result
available
on-line the next day, by precinct. We certainly have the
technological capability to do this. That way if something
fishy occurs
we can gather
together
by neighborhood and
see
where
things
went wrong.
But first, let's contract with Apple to design the next generation
of voting tools. If there's anyone who can make it simple
and
intuitive and hack-proof it's Steve Job's boys.
