The Day of the Locust

texas xmasWe had the Stanfill Family Xmas and Semi-Pro Lasagna-Eating Contest this past Saturday. About thirty genetically-similar primates stormed my dear sister's house and proceeded to engage in all manner of impertinent opprobrium, common discourtesy, and choice invective.

In other words, a great time was had by all. Hope your seasonal celebration is equally enjoyable.

---------------

Wintry weather has finally began to insinuate itself into the balmy paradise we call North Texas. Its most profound effect so far is that my car battery has crossed the rubicon from nimble powerhouse to senile old fart, starting the car with seemingly Herculean effort while continually mumbling under its breath about moving to Florida.

So this weekend I told the old gentleman that we were going for a pleasant ride in the country but quietly, very quietly, drove instead to my nearest auto parts store in order to put the old boy out to pasture. As reward for my treachery I discovered
the current replacement battery for my car is nudging close to $120 even though my last battery purchase in late 2006 was a very reasonable $50.

Wha hoppened? Is this the price the rest of us have to pay so Prius owners can look that much more smug?

Fortunately, a combination of rebates and coupons knocked $45 off the sticker price and, with any luck, I'll get most of the 8-year lifespan it's limited-warranteed for. So if you're interested in a good deal on a battery, check out the Bosch's at Pep Boys. (Offer good through the 31st ) Consider this a helpful consumer tip.

covenenant houseEvery day in this country young adults are forced into the streets with no place to go and little to eat. Luckily for them there's places like Covenant House. It not only meets the immediate needs of homeless kids but also helps guide them to a self-sufficient future.

So if you have a few bucks left over after buying Aunt Thelma that new snood please consider making a small holiday donation to this worthy organization. Thanks!
