You Better Wait A Minute!

postage stampThe U.S. Postal Service has its share of problems but I cannot imagine this country without it. I always smile when I send a letter, one whose ultimate destination is hundreds of miles away, for nothing more than pocket change. FedEx and UPS even use the USPS to deliver its packages the "last mile", so even they think it's a bargain.

So what's wrong with the USPS? Why is it billions of dollars in the hole? Four words:

George W. Fucking Bush.

You see, in 2006 a Congressional mandate was passed requiring the USPS to fully pre-fund its future retiree health benefits for the next 75 years, but gave them only ten years to do it. It is the only federal agency required to do so. If not for this ridiculous rule the USPS would still be profitable. Very profitable.

Sound insane? Not if your plan is to have the Postal Service default, at which time you gain control of the fat jackpot of billions and billions in pension funds. "Control" as in, "shovel it into the pockets of your rich friends as fast as humanly possible". If that sounds far-fetched then you obviously don't remember how the courts and the feds raped the airline pensions in 2005.

And that, dear friends, is what's wrong with the Postal Service.

The answer, some suggest, and I agree, is to allow the pre-funding to come from pension surpluses instead of operating funds.

Keep in mind that not one tax dollar goes to running the USPS and its pension fund is already overpaid by an estimated $50 billion dollars. Let's not lose this Constitutionally mandated program just because a cabal of greedy bastards see an opportunity to get a lot richer.

For more on this take a moment to hear the America Postal Worker Union president's side of the story on the Ed Show.

What? You think you'd ever see him on Fox News? Silly humans.

Republican Job Creation Update

john boehner"We're going to have a relentless focus on creating jobs." - John Boehner, February 10, 2011.

The following is #67 in a list of Republican job creation activities since they gained control of the House in 2011. None, sad to say, have yet to result in one, single new job.

(67) 8-17-2011: Republicans Darrell Issa and Dennis Ross introduced a bill in July that would accelerate the destruction of the USPS and put all of its employees, hundreds of thousands of good Americans, out of work.

Fuck Darrell Issa and fuck Dennis Ross! Fuck 'em until their ancestors rise from the dead and beg forgiveness for ever having sired the malevolent little deviates.
